CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Wyoming Highway Patrol has made another large marijuana bust. Troopers found 114 pounds of the drug inside a vehicle on Interstate 80 over the weekend.
The driver had stopped near Cheyenne, Wyo. on Saturday afternoon, because the road was closed from the weather.
The driver asked for directions, saying she was headed to Charlotte, N.D. But then she changed her destination to Charlotte, N.C.
Troopers smelled marijuana in the vehicle and noticed a blanket covering several suitcases in the back seat. The smell was enough for a search.
Inside the suitcases, troopers found 108 packages containing 114 pounds of marijuana. The estimated street value is $285,000.
And inside a backpack, troopers say they found evidence indicating a “large money laundering enterprise.”
The driver, Ngoc Thi Bich Pham, 39, and passenger, Hung Minh Nguyen, 45, were both arrested on three felony charges: possession of a controlled substance in plant form more than 3 ounces, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Both Pham and Nguyen are from Renton, Wash. In an interview after their arrest, Nguyen said he stood to make $18,000 from the incident. Pham was to be paid $4,000.
