ATTICA — An Olean man faces several charges after he allegedly punched an officer and kicked his knee, causing injury, after he responded to a report of a vehicle in a ditch on Dunbar Road. He was jailed on $25,000 bail or $50,000 bond, the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office reported Sunday.
The Sheriff’s Office reported that Attica Police Officer Karl Zufall responded to the scene first to assist while Attica Fire Department personnel tried to aid the driver, David F. Woods Jr., 46. Woods reportedly refused medical treatment and while waiting for sheriff’s deputies to arrive, Woods allegedly punched the Attica officer. The officer deployed the Taser on Woods and a struggle ensued. Firefighters assisted while Woods was taken into custody.
While authorities were attempting to place Woods in the rear seat of a Sheriff’s Office vehicle, Woods allegedly forcefully kicked Zufall’s knee, causing injury. Zufall was treated at Wyoming County Community Hospital and released, the Sheriff’s Office said Sunday. No further information about Zufall’s status was available today. Attica Police Chief Dean Hendershott did not comment, but said he would release a statement Monday. Woods was taken to the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office, where he allegedly refused to take a chemical test.
Woods was charged with the following: second-degree assault, third-degree attempted assault, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, unlawful possession of marijuana, driving while intoxicated, refusal of breath test, speed not reasonable and prudent, moved from lane unsafely and failed to keep right. He was arraigned in the Town of Attica Court where bail was set at $25,000 or bond at $50,000. Woods is scheduled to reappear May 7 in Town of Attica Court.
